Digi-Key Design Services Provider

Frequently Asked Questions

How old is Stilwell Baker?

Stilwell Baker Inc., was incorporated in 1993. The company’s early focus was providing contract engineering services and earned an excellent reputation with prominent customers, such as Hewlett-Packard, providing printed circuit board layout and design on hundreds of projects. Stilwell Baker has since evolved to become a proven leader in the design, manufacture, and support of custom legacy and new electronic products and systems. We have expanded and strengthened our electrical and mechanical engineering capabilities to include a staff of approximately 20 electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, firmware, and software programmers—while maintaining our PCB layout capabilities.

What is Stilwell Baker's specialty?

Our specialty is providing customers with complete turnkey solutions—from initial electronics and mechanical design, including ergonomics, through prototype and complete manufacturing, final packaging, certification and regulatory compliance testing. We can also help customers with smaller, simpler projects such as voltage regulators, power supplies, and LED lighting boards installed in mechanical enclosures, etc.

What types of Services does Stilwell Baker provide?

Our capabilities include engineering, reverse-engineering, modernizing and manufacturing complete electronic and mechanical systems for a number of industries, including aviation, medical, and industrial applications. From renovating obsolete equipment to designing new electronic products containing analog or digital electronics, firmware, and software, Stilwell Baker provides the complete engineering solution.

What is a typical project size and duration for Stilwell Baker?

Typically we specialize in smaller run “niche” type projects with runs of under a 1,000 units; however, we do much larger projects, too.

Do you work onsite at client’s office or offsite?

Both, as required by the customer or the project. Our engineers can work at your site, augmenting your engineering team. Or we can take the entire project offsite to complete in our facilities.

How quickly can you start?

It depends on the scope of the project. Work can begin within a few days or up to a few weeks.

What are Stilwell Baker's labor rates?

Our rates are based on the scope of the project and level of work that is required for a specific project.  Please contact us at sales@stilwellbaker.com with project inquiries and for more details regarding our pricing structure.

How does Stilwell Baker differ from its competitors?

While other smaller companies and individuals do engineering and design work on a case-by-case basis, they usually do not have the full breadth and depth of design and manufacturing capabilities offered by Stilwell Baker. Larger companies may provide the full scope of our services, but they typically focus on consumer and large projects of over $1,000,000. They are not interested in the “niche” projects and small run products that Stilwell Baker does well and we can quote on a fixed-fee basis.

What type of projects does Stilwell Baker tend to avoid?

We tend to not work in consumer products, or low margin and high volume projects. We prefer to be involved with the full scope of the project if possible.  We sometimes start with part of the project, such as the writing the engineering spec, fixing mistakes made by other engineering efforts, or doing just PCB layout, to build the customer relationship.

Why does Stilwell Baker have addresses in Washingon and Oregon?

We have two offices, our Vancouver, WA Design Center and an office in Tualatin, OR.
